The Berryessa Flea market is in north-east San Jose, and was founded by George Bumb Sr. in March of 1960 (exactly 59 years before this recording). It has eight miles worth of aisles, over 2000 vendors, and more than 4 million visitors per year. In late summer of 2017 the property was sold and San Jose City Council approved a proposal to rezone the property for development. The area was also renamed as Berryessa District, and referred to as Berryessa/North San Jose, distancing it from its Eastside affiliations. This approval was both part of larger Bay Area wide gentrification, as well as San Jose specific transportation-oriented gentrification (as B.A.R.T was expected to begin service in the area in 2016). As of 2019 San Jose City Council has proposed plans for mixed-use housing and commercial buildings. BART is slated to open at the end of the year (2019).
